21.9.18 - Day 22 Odense/Egeskov Castle

Had the best sleep last night. Some partying happening somewhere down a lane, but didn’t keep me up.

Another great breakfast and lunch made also.

Then out to the train station at 9.15 to head to today’s destination - Egeskov Castle. Our waitress at hotel warned us of the weather which is wind in the west that will come our way this afternoon. Tracy’s weather prediction is a little rain later on and lots tomorrow.

Waiting patiently for our train and discussing the need to press a button on the train for our stop.
A flag flying proudly in house backing onto the tracks.
Working in the paddocks.
Our train.
The windy walk out to Egeskov Castle.

Suzie and Tracy striding it out. Flowers growing wild in the paddock.
Lots of different colours
A house along the way.
This must be the road to Egeskov.

The day at Egeskov was amazing. A privately owned castle just outside Odense. It has been around for 500 years. The present family are the 9th generation of a family that has owned it since the 1700s. They still live here. The photos following are within the grounds and inside the Castle itself.

A house along the way.
Gates to part of Egeskov gardens

The gardens were stunning.
Keeping a few gardeners busy I think.
Beautiful colour

The castle sitting majestically in its grounds.
There were many different ROOMS within the gardens. Sculpture, trees, topiary and oh so many flowers.
Very tall trees
Fuchsias always remind me of Grandma and Papa’s garden.
Another Egeskov angle
Topiary snails.
Sitting in its Lake.
A twisted maze of trunks of a hedge.
All the animals were hunted, killed and displayed by the ancestors
This Tiger skin was on omen for the Tigers who lost their final and were eliminated on this day.
View from a tower window The weather finally snapped on us.
It was windy and raining while we were in the castle.

The displays throughout several floors of the castle were fabulous.

Our knight in shining armour (see explanation in pic below), in front of a fancy grand piano.

This was an amazing heater, very intricate and a few different ones through the castle.

Loved the views out various windows, around the castle
and towers.

Glad that's not my job.

The victims and the guns used.

So many "trophies" very artistically displayed.

The next 6 pictures, are of various rooms in Titiania's Palace.
A doll's house on steroids. Amazing attention to detail.

It's like looking at a real life sized room, but it actually about 50cm or less across.

Suzie checking out the detail.

Titiania's place still.

More windows, looking at the immaculately manicured grounds.

Over the moat and into the garden.

The 'Wooden Man' he is a carved man, lying on a cushion in the rafters
below the spire. Legend has it, that if he is moved from this spot, Egeskov will into
the moat on Christmas Eve.

Looking down on the Gatehouse and circular garden.

The Gatehouse housed a unique Fashion Exhibition.

Replica kitchen

Tea Maker - samovar - see description below.

The Egeskov dinner set.
Upstairs in the attic, they had a display of toys over the years, displayed very well in these plastic 'bubbles'.

More toys

We finished in the Castle, then out into the weather and over to the Gatehouse to checkout the Fashion. It was full of amazing clothing from family over the ages.

Fancy old hatbox.

Luggage.

Braving the elements.

Castle cat, hanging in the Entrance shop.

Couldn't get enough of the Castle, from every angle.

Looking back to Egeskov from other side, perfectly pruned hedge and
a golden orb sculpture in the lake.

Huge old trees.

Looking spectacular

It was pretty damn windy. Checkout the bend on the flagpole.
NB: Very skinny lion, you can clearly see ribs.

Outbuildings around the property.

Even the taps were fancy.

More gardens.

From memory, this was Hans Christian Anderson and I can't remember
which Fairytale the mirror refers too.
A windy walk back to the bus stop.

Leaning into the wind. Thankfully it had stopped raining.

Waiting at the bus stop.

On Board, back to the train station.
A rainbow down the street, upon return to Odense.

Hadn't take pics in this hotel - First Hotel Grand. The room was a funny shape, but more
comfortable. I love how they fold the doona.

The window out to a lane. More of my strange roofline.

Bathroom, socks drying.
Back at the hotel, I decided to venture out for a wander around Odense. It was clean and clear after the rain.
Statue.

Again, Hans is everywhere. Hat on.

Hat off.
Sky looking ominous.

A heart sculpture

HCA again.

A small park on a river.

Strange spiky gold ball on a spike.

The Newspaper hat.

There was lots of building and development going on it Odense.

headspace...not sure if its same or different one to ours.

Translation..headspace - someone to talk to.
Our hotel was Grand by name and quite Grand by nature also.
Love their flower pots, much preferable to our concrete block
bollards.

Last drinks in Odense.

Not quite, maybe this is the last drink in Odense.
Out for dinner down the street. It was nice, but I
can't recall what it was.

Not quite what Suzie expected from her order.

But it looked pretty good.

The ladies next door, had something with potato...lots and lots
of potato.

Mashed spud all the way round the plate.

Home to pack and bed. Tomorrow to Copenhagen and Sunday - fly home.

The Last Post.....
Today we visited a
We had a taste today of what our weather could have been the whole time we have been away. Some rain and a fierce biting wind. Tomorrow will be the same. We can’t complain because we have unbelievably fortunate.
Tomorrow we have an earlyish train back to Copenhagen, then fly home Sunday.
We have had a brilliant time.
