10.9.18 Day 11 - Hurtigruten Nordkapp and Sami Autumn
Phew, really tired this morning. The Northern Lights were spectacular last night. To quote a friend of ours from Oz

We are a long way North

One of our blog followers from home (Gwen) has a nephew living in Norway - at a place called Mehamn. Can you believe how close we are?

Coming into Honningsvåg I think.

We are taking the Nordkapp Tour (North Cape) from Honningsvåg- a bus to the North Cape.

A sculpture of a dog that was famous, he went to war and helped many.

We are here at the North Cape. See the globe behind us.

Up close and personal

Nice pic of the balustrade

It’s right up North.

Closer

Children of the Earth sculpture. Explanation at: http://www.barnavjorden.org/en/welcome

The other sculptures- one done by each child. Other pics in camera.

Just to show the detail 71degrees 21’21”

Birds

Razorbills I think

Puffins

The design of the chairs in the Chapel took my fancy

Altar in the chapel
Then it was back in the bus via a small Sami display with reindeer - I neglected to take any phone shots. Oops..

Departing Honningsvåg

On the front of ship watching departure.

The Sami flag Circle blue1/2 represents moon red 1/2 represents sun.The 4 colours are the traditional colours used in their clothing.

The leather pants and shoes were summer ones.

Amazing bowls of birch with intricately carved reindeer antlers inlaid in the handles.

Amazing fine work.

This drum had a long story. Its use was banned by the christians as it was deemed to be part of the Sami’s nature based religion.

The explanation he gave left me with the sense of something similar to a seance.

He pushed this ring around with the other carved antler piece.

Then he changed to a new drum and played and sang to us b

Summer and winter shoes

A baby carrier.

That drum.

Carving on deer antler.

Some shots from the bus on way back to ship.

Awful shot but gives a sense.

Here we are at Mehamn port terminal
Then back to the ship at Mehamn - yes the place I mentioned earlier where Gwen’s nephew is living and working in the fishing industry with his Norwegian wife and family - such a small world!
The skies lit up and the light was bouncing across the back of our boat"
It really was sooo much better than the night before. Haven’t checked the pics yet, but is burnt on the card in my brain. We had to ring Tracy to get her out of bed. Colours were visible to the naked eye unlike the first night when they looked like light cloud in the sky.

We sailed onto Krollejfjord where we departed for another tour. This time to experience a Sami Autumn. We were taken to a Sami home where a delightfully humble Sami man shared his story, he told us of and showed us and gave us tastes of Sami food, drink, natural willow medicine and sung to us also. An amazing culture.

As we were enjoying our last dinner, a buffet for the last night, (9.30ish) they announced the Northern Lights being seen over the ship. So off we went. Well I did and Suzie, Tracy went back to cabin to pack.
It was pretty good so we messaged Tracy to come out for a look. She did. I ran out of battery, and went below to changeover. I don’t reckon it got any better and maybe not as good as last night. We are still just in awe of the fact that we have seen them at all.
Our last port was Bervelåg at 10.00. In and out again in 15 minutes to allow any passengers and cargo on and off. The lights kept dancing over the town which was great.

Then it was time for packing - our suitcases need to be outside in the common area prior to midnight.

More Northern lights will be on camera - will have to wait for some down time.
Pretty cool, those Northern lights!
