14.9.18 Day 15 - Leaving Stockholm and time for Road Trip.

Up and out this am. We left hotel about 9.30 with plans to meet at Central Station at 10.25. Suzie and Tracey went via the Shopping Strip - Drottningaten and Nic wandered down some other streets. Needed some lozenges for sore throat and wanted to see another street.

View from Hotel window on way to breaky on 6th floor.

Breakfast was pretty awesome.

Lovely rolls and breads. Also eggs and hot food I forgot to snap.

5 blokes working on re rendering the place next door. Everywhere we go there are Reno’s, reconstructions and restorations.
Some more manhole covers.

A cool window display on Nic’s walk.

Spökparken. Nice flowers.

Streetscape

St Adolf Kyrka (church)

The Lion Bollards.

Window display of essences and herbs et al.

The essence shop

Groovy verandah. Seems odd to see the mix of old and new. Incongruent for Burger King to have such an old place.

This street had pink swans flying overhead.

Very cool street.

Love these walkways connecting the buildings.

Post office

Post office

Central Station. Good place for a cab. They are expensive here, we haven’t needed one other than our flat rate one from airport.

Great lamps and portico at Central Station.

Nic has coffee.

Everyone has coffee. We had seen Joe and the Juice right through Norway too. I was keen to try.

Time for coffee.

Beautiful architecture and paintwork

3 coffees hit the spot (one each)
After a quick coffee we headed up the road to Sheraton where Nic has hired a car from Sixt.

Car hire joint

Stockholm town hall tower.

Safely back to hotel, luggage in and ready to roll. A BMW 5 I think.

I had preplanned the trip and had the towns entered into my CoPilot app. We couldn’t get the display in English so asked one of the staff at the hotel to come and help me. It worked a treat once we could read the damn thing. So we had CoPilot and the BMW Navigator giving us different directions to same place. It took quite a while to get out of Stockholm - we did miss a few turns as I got used to the navigation instructions.

We eventually made it out of the city and things got a little easier.

The hardest thing is overtaking. They don’t stay out in the passing lane and cut back much sooner than I’m accustomed too, so I’ve gotta floor it to overtake and then cut back to the right hand side.

We pulled into a Servo to try and get a real roadmap, to no avail. They sent us further off the track and we messed up getting back on freeway.

Eventually we found another Sixt store, but they had none either and sent us next door where we finally had success and no charge. Now we have CoPilot, BMW and Suzie all providing advice. Very helpful though.

Roadtrippers

Quite a long wait at these roadworks

Yep? ! We have not much clue. The Kommun is the municipality we are entering.

Farm - Lots of these farms along the route.

Police. Was told they are tough on speed. We seem to be the only ones doing the speed limit (other than trucks and buses)

Linköping (pr Lin-chopin) our first stop. There is a gothic cathedral.

Amazing gothic cathedral.

Town coat of arms.

The Cathedral

Massive door.

Town manhole.
The manholes change in every place. They usually depict something relevant to the town or part of the city.

Inside the massive Cathedral

These pieces of glass in the floor are Pearls of life. There is a whole story.

Some beautiful glass

Homeless man sculpture lying near really old crypts.

There is an amazing ‘Mary’ etched in the plain glass. Very difficult to capture in pics.

Another pearl

And another

Ornate pulpit.

The collection bag

Another pearl. They are inlaid into the floor.

Selfie in the Golden pearl.

Town flag.

Florist

Parking meter man

Optometrist

Parking the car was a whole new ball game. It was a ticket machine which we couldn’t understand. Thankfully, a person we’d asked for directions came over and helped us out.

Back to the car and on our way again.

Given the time taken to get out of Stockholm I had to cut out Jonkoping. Our next stop took us off the Freeway to Vadstena where there was meant to be a
Runestone to look at. It was a seaside village with an Amazing Fortress Castle.

The castle didn’t even rate a mention in Lonely Planet. When we asked in a store about the Rune stone they said it was in another town!!! Bugger. So we had coffee and cake instead.  I studied the Lonely Planet again and found the instructions to an old Abbey in town, beside which the Rune Stone was meant to be.

Bingo - we found the Abbey…

...and the Rune Stone. A bit of old history there.
The runestone is the Östergötland Rune.
The runic text indicates that the stone was raised as a memorial to a father named Áskell.

From Vadstena we headed through farming country to Eskjo - arriving late at almost 9pm. We checked in and went downstairs for a quick bite. The bar was busy.

The bar - outside with heater was a little quieter than inside in the busy bar.

My burger - yum.

Tracy had something else I can’t recall.
