3.9.18-Oslo To Bergen
Awake early this am 4.00am. Sort of dozed listened to Overnights with Trevor, dozed through Jacinta and Sammy.

Suzie checking us in - she is not a fan and prefers a person!

But we managed, easily, with no time pressures.

Tracy chilling.

Suzie chilling

And me blogging and chilling.

View or the plane from air bridge.
It’s a 50 min flight so we’ll be in the way down before we get up.

There is a dam wall in that lake

Weird white stuff, not sure if it’s no it didn’t look like it to me.

Lots of inhabited islands but many with no sign of life.

We arrived in Bergen five minutes and schedule and straight out to a taxi and into town.

Our cabbie was a lovely Kurdish fella. Gave us a bit of information as we drive to and through Bergen.

Tracy’s room was ready to check in, so we deposited our luggage there, then headed off to find the railway station to collect our tickets for the Norway in a Nutshell tour tomorrow.

Waiting for the funicular.

Here it comes

View back down from in the funicular

Looking down the track and over the harbour.

Amazing views from the top.

When we came back down we had 30 minutes before next bus - just enough time for a little hygge. We had coffee and cake at Godt Bred.

The coffee and kashewnotkake were delicious.
Got up and did some more research for Stockholm. Then showered, checked out, then went down for breaky (and lunch). While at breakfast Trip it alerted me that our 9.10 flight to Bergen was cancelled- no other news just cancelled.
We met in foyer at 7.15, cab to National Theatre Station, then Flytoget Train to Airport. We arrived and did the kiosk check in to find ourselves rebooked on 10.55 to Bergen,

But we managed, easily, with no time pressures.
So some time to kill/chill at airport.
Tracy chilling.
Suzie chilling
And me blogging and chilling.
Almost three hours later we boarded our replacement flight SK257 Oslo To Bergen.
View or the plane from air bridge.
It’s a 50 min flight so we’ll be in the way down before we get up.
Captain announced that cancellation was due to lack of crew and apologised. As a result it’s a full plane - we are in the back end me in row 28, Tracy 27 and Suzie is further up we all have windows which suits me for a short flight.
Views of the mountains and whatnot on the flight awesome so glad to have windows.
See photos below I don’t know what most of us I won’t caption them. Lots of mountains lots of bare rock wierd white stuff, likes everywhere and then as we neared Bergen lots more housing and built-up areas. Also boats and bridges.

The walk took us through the Old town and along the iconic area of Bryggen with the old buildings along the waterfront.
View from hotel stairwell. We are on the 9th floor

Beautiful manhole cover.

Some street art along the way and graffiti unfortunately. We had been struck by how graffiti free Oslo was.

More street art

And more

There are houses and buildings everywhere, seemingly built on top of each other as they climb the steep hills surrounding the city. Just beautiful. The rooftops and rooflines are full of different shapes and colours and steeples just amazing.

The buildings are pastel coloured.

After collecting the tickets we walked back up another street grabbed some groceries and fruit and sat and ate lunch in a pedestrian area.
We decided we would do a hop on hop off tour which we found at the at the infiormtiion centre and fishmarket. This to our included a ride up the mountain in a funicular.

Beautiful gardens.

Coloured buildings in this old style everywhere.

The commentary on the bus was superfast as there was so much to see in such a short space of time. Once again we learnt so much and too much for me to remember. Here are some of the facts I can recall:

The commentary on the bus was superfast as there was so much to see in such a short space of time. Once again we learnt so much and too much for me to remember. Here are some of the facts I can recall:
- Population of Bergen is about 250,000 many of whom live within the city area which is surrounded by seven mountains, The rest live outside the mountains and which gives the city lots and lots of space people spread everywhere it seems
- There are quite a few Cruise lines and crew ships in town
We eventually made it to the funicular stop m, which is called the Floibananen and took off to board with our hop on hop off ticket. However, it transpired that our driver had failed to give us our separate tickets and given our day was quickly running out we purchased tickets and took the short ride up the very steep Mt Floyen to see the city from above.

Then we continued our hop on hop off tour around town. We also let the driver know of the mishap with tickets, he (not our original driver) informed us we’d need to sort it out back at fishmarket stop. When we arrived a nice bloke from the company sorted it out. We got a refund AND a new ticket for bus on Wednesday when we are back in town. So a real bonus for us.
Then we continued walking around the fishmarket and waterfront area.
Lots of tinned fish

Caviar and the hi vis salesman

Mmmmm yes I’m afraid so. It’s smoked whale meat.

A monkfish. A deep water bottom feeder, if you look closely you might see the little antennae in its head which are the lights that attract the fish that it eats. Also a very good eating fish we are told.

Crab claws.

King crab claws and other stuff.

A live king crab being held by August.

Dried salmon. They eat this at Christmas. Soak it for five days and it rehydrates.

We bought some strawberries which wed been advised were divine in Norway and Georgie was absolutely spot on.

Yes, Suzie and I tried them all. Whale, Moose and Reindeer salami. Reindeer was best in my opinion.

The old Bryggen buildings, all hickedly pickedly. They are being restored as the bulwarks they sit on are rotting.

The stairs up to the Christmas shop had a definite list to the left.

A plant on an old building.

Our hotel Thon Orion.

Cheers.
The hotel is once again fabulous. Suzie has set a high bar. Our last Thon in Oslo had been renovated this year, so we thought that might have been the best. This one was renovated last year in May so looks good and we get breakfast AND a light evening meal included. So after our busy afternoons we tried it out. Salad, a chilli stew, cheesecake and fruit were in offer. All good. We even had their famous Brown Cheese - just tasted like cheese.
